Publisher Spotlight: Dancing Cat Books

Dancing Cat Books a new imprint of Cormorant Books, a Canadian book publisher.  Its mission is to publish "author-driven literary fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for the young adult and middle-grades, as well as picture books."

For Parents

Although Dancing Cat Books has not published many books to date, they appear to be carefully chosen and well-crafted based on the reviews and award nominations they have received.  For younger children, I would recommend the highly amusing picture book "Giraffe and Bird" by author and artist Rebecca Bender.

For Writers & Illustrators
Unlike Cormorant Books, Dancing Cat Books does accept unsolicited manuscripts.  They are looking for young adult and middle grade fiction submissions, but are not currently accepting picture book submissions.  They are also looking for art portfolios.  Click here for further details on submission guidelines.

**Insider Tip:  I heard Barry Jowett, the associate publisher of Dancing Cat Books, speak in Toronto at last September's Word on the Street.  Some personal pet peeves of his are: multiple perspectives, multiple timelines (i.e. flashbacks), time travel books (especially where time travel is just a gimmick, or boring times/places are visited), books told through letters/diaries and people just trying to jump on trends (e.g. vampires).
